Why not just use the Imageshack thumbnail code?
The thread will load faster and then you can have all the pictures in one row in each post rather than having them one under the other.

CRITIQUE
What an exciting and educational thread. Thank you Jamey. You may surely be counted on for the high quality of your work.
Of course, it could easily go without saying that each person has their own feelings and emotions related to these images. But Anaerin and TomahnaGuy have suggested another way to think about these images â not just through the filter of nostalgia, harping upon the obvious iconic qualities raised by these images.
Aside from their emotional tug, the suggestion seems to be that artists like Jamey, Gandhar and Preach are exposing to us to their own level of seeing â opening up a new way of seeing old images.
Anaerin said:
âDidn't Cyan use dithering? I'm thinking these look a little too rough... â
TomahnaGuy said:
âI love these. Really brings out all the contrast and colours in Uru.â
Two innocent yet intelligent statements, which begin to open two different ways of seeing all these wonderful images:
1. Anaerin seems to be pointing to the quality of work done by Cyan.
2. TomahnaGuy seems to be applauding the new exposures opened to us by artists in interpreting Cyan's original work.
Some people may imagine that what they are seeing, everyone is seeing. That is NOT what these two different visions are saying.
THE CYAN WAY
Clearly, it is necessary to make this argument through the illustrations:
http://i121.photobucket.com/albums/o206/pappou/DelinbyJamey1.png
Jamey's versioin of Delin not only focuses the eye more than we actually saw in visiting Delin, but it is a little sharper, the colors a bit more emphasized. Yet, it is Delin as we recall it: The wonderful mysts, the colors of the air, the various images that make up what we remember -- these are faithfully rendered here. It may be a bit sharper and even better than we saw it, but it truly stands for that which was Delin. These are qualities that good mimetic art offers us.
A NEW INTERPRETATION
This sort of faithful Mimesis, which artists have always relied upon as the backstay of art, is NOT what Jamey is doing with the Karaff (sp?) Monument in Ae'gura:
http://i121.photobucket.com/albums/o206/pappou/MystasAegurabyJamey-1.png
I realize that Jamey has other intentions for this work, but that is true of every work, versus what any critic might say. That is not the point which is available in this unusual display of works. To my mind, the depiction of the Arch above no longer has all that much to do with Uru and Ae'gura.
It seems that Jamey is using the Arch as a stepping stone, but the product is now a new surrealistic image reflecting Jamey's own imagination as an artist, much more than it faithfully depicts the Arch, as it really was (in our imaginations).
Jamey's work is a new work. It stands on its own. It makes, as I said, a new surrealistic image, and it is quite good, in my mind.
However, its uniqueness forbids us to compare it to other representations which try to faithfully recreate the atmosphere of some Myst/Uru scene â as the Delin scene did so well above.
Thus, as Anaerin so clearly pointed out, we may assess this nice collection of images by comparing them to the quality of Cyan's work; or as TomahnaGuy suggested, we may judge the quality of these works according to the new visions they bring to us â visions beyond what Cyan tried to do.
That is one comparison. Another is just how well these images do what they seem to be trying to do?
One way of tackling this sort of judgment is provided by the artists themselves. Anaerin's version of Teledahn is especially set up in order to compare it to Gandhar's. I love this comparison (but i'm afraid the mods would not stand for me taking up all the space I should like to speak on that score). Look at the beautiful mysty grays in Gandhar's work, how distance is marked by the atmosphere itself. That is very Cyan-like. But Ahaerin's version is more Cyan-like in its coloring â indeed, it seems to be a screen shot. Yet, I think Gandhar's version is more beautiful.
There is yet another point brought out in these works. It is a more important point, I think. It causes us to reflect upon the quality of Cyan's rendering of textures, which often is fantastic while other times it is merely great.
Preachr46's Gira Waterfall causes us to ponder these issues:
http://i121.photobucket.com/albums/o206/pappou/GiraWaterfallbyPreachr46-1.png
You may contrast Preachr46's work with Jamey's of the same subject:
http://i121.photobucket.com/albums/o206/pappou/GhiraWaterfallbyJamey-1.png
Here, Jamey is less original than at the Arch, but still he expands the envelope of Cyan's work. Re: the unvarnished screenshot of the Gira Waterfall below:
http://i121.photobucket.com/albums/o206/pappou/GiraWaterfallbypappou2.png
One thing which makes this comparison difficult is the bigger than life Arizona style scenery. It refuses to encourage delicate comparisons. Thus, you see Preachr46's work as calling attention to its highly stylized composition, whereas Jamey's waterfall uses more enhancements of the original as opposed to promoting a startling new style of its own (as say, his surrealistic Arch).
There is much to be said about these two works, but all I have space for is to suggest that Preachr46's image is less interested in reproducing the fine detail of texture which Cyan so often gave us. Look at the containing walls in Kemo. You will see fairly simple looking erosions there, but the up close detail is very well done. I would hate to loose that quality in any new work, such as in the new Ages.

So many inventive views of Uru encourage me to offer a word of caution, for the excitement of inventive exploration sometimes causes us to overlook small problems. One problem is the difference between RL and 3D animation (as in playing Uru); versus 2D pics.
In 2D pics I was cautioned by none other than the famous photographer, Ezra Stoller, to be careful to keep the verticals vertical. Its a problem of staying parallel. Sometimes it is needed, but sometimes there are legitimate reasons to forgo parallelness.
For instance, in Jamey's view at the bottom of the great shaft, the columns are meant to grow upward toward the flying viewer. Those columns ought to splay out as they do, not be made parallel, or vertical. Likewise, in Gondahr's flight through Direbo:
http://i121.photobucket.com/albums/o206/pappou/GondahrDirebo1.png
his view is looking down upon verticalness, and the trees ought not be in parallel mode.
However, in Gondahr's view at water level of Water Ahnonay, the clock tower is tilted at a crazy angle:
http://i121.photobucket.com/albums/o206/pappou/Gandahr-WaterAhnonay.png
In this case I think it should be made vertical:
http://i121.photobucket.com/albums/o206/pappou/Gandahr-WaterAhnonay3.png
I have been often criticized in my own photography. Ezra Stoller was only one example. So, you may take what I say as the voice of one who knows nothing, and dismiss it. Or, you might think that since I have made so many mistakes, I have learned something, and I should pass it on?
In this same vein I have taken the trouble to put one of Jamey's striking compositions back into its parallel correction:
http://i121.photobucket.com/albums/o206/pappou/KarafArch3.png
Ezral Stoller would have loved it. What do you think Jamey?

[Just kidding Jamey. Really, that is only a joke. Stop! Don't throw that brick at me!

I'd love to have a closer look at your images Jamey but when I click on the link for these latest images to go to Image shack I get one of those creepy pop ups that look like a fake Microsoft Dialogue box, which you just know probably contains a Trojan or some other kind of malware. Just thought I'd let you know as this is the first time this has happened when I've looked at your gorgeous images.

I've been using Imageshack for years and I've personally never had any problems with it, but I get your point QuinMaddox
I tried to use the thumbnails to save loading time, but something I can also do is stick to just posting the actual size images in Spoiler tabs like this:

Now unfortunately, because I am posting the images directly on here, it may take time to load for some. I really do not want to have to shrink down the images using Imageshack because whenever I do that, the quality vanishes with it. Keeping it actual size is imperative for me.
Mods, if you are reading this, do you think I should stick to just posting the images like I have done above? Like QuinMaddox said, I don't want to link anyone to sites with potentially harmfull pop-ups.
And as for the other thumbnails, I'll get those fixed as soon as I can

I don't think I've ever gotten a picture inspired by music chrissifniotis, but I'll give it a try and see what happens.
My pics are a combination of both pics from Uru CC, and some shots I took in MOUL before the shutdown.
Anyway, here are todays pics!

The stranger's "Gahreesen in motion" picture makes me a bit dizzy!
I need to make some of these, but I'm no artist and I only have 800x600 shots of everything. (I do have 1,170 pictures to work with, though!
I went a bit trigger-happy the last weeks.)

Okay, I'll pass you the somgs in question;
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QY6YpJv90tE
March 23 - Jean Michel Jarre, I really don't understand why a get them, but I seem to imagine watching the Cleft through history.
I'll let you listen and decide, but I privately call the song 'The Cleft, March 23rd'
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=beo2SimRPtg (the better, louder version was taken down.
)
Millions of Stars - Jean Michel Jarre, I tend to attach this song to ages at night, and also to a lesser extent the Tree of Possibility. I truely enjoy this song, this particular concert version for its additional lyrics. It's difficult to explain, but I have the feeling that it seems to almost speak to the Art itself.
I'm an artsy person!
Anyway, have a listen, and try some songs you have as well, I just wanna see if it can be done.

Alright chrissifniotis, I got a chance to listen to the first one, March 23 today, I got quite a different visual from it than you did. Gahreesen came to my mind. I'll come up with something on this before I do the second song.
I'll put up the pictures either today tomorrow (As soon as I can)

chrissifniotis, Blender is like a paintbrush. It can create amazing things, if you know how to use it
It requires a lot of self-teaching and motivation, but with the tutorials on the GoMa and the GoW sites, it should make it somewhat easy to jump into once you master how the interface works. Once you learn how to use Blender, you'll be very comfortable with it I'm sure. Knowing how to work Photoshop for making textures will help immensely as well.
Plus, it is totally worth it, these are a few of my other concepts and completed ages (These will be todays pics
):

I think I like the first one better.
New textures for table-tops is a good idea though. That design would look better if it weren't overlapping the original (they just don't seem to mesh well).
Nice work!
Uru's true beauty
Author: EthanEver

The ground texture is indeed pretty bad. The adjusted lighting makes the table and the stool look like they are floating in the air. Plus there are no ambient shadows. Maybe Jamey boosted up the brightness of the pic a bit too much. In Cavern the pub was always much darker so these things don't really matter there.
The ground texture could be made better in PS, but it would take sampling the texture from another point of view and then cloned to extend it large enough to be rotated in 3D (perspective) and finally merged to the main level of the pic.

Perhaps the restoration efforts would also have highlighted some of the details, or made them clearer. Or it's just crazy-impressive details because they know the fans will look for them.

Wow! Fantastic!
That picture reminds me of a quote from Arthur C. Clark used in a concert;
"Life on other planets will be even more varied than they are on this planet. It depends on a large extent on the gravitational field, on a planet with a much higher gravity than Earth, obviously you can't have large animals, you'll have small and squaple (sp), perhaps wuth many legs. On the other hand on a planet with a very low gravity than Earth, you'll have very spindley, thin animals, very tall ones and trees hundreds....feet; hundreds of meters high, maybe even kilometers high. The variations you'll find in space are almost infinite."

What Ethan said
Once I bought Fraps, I found myself able to take screenshots left and right without minimizing MOUL, giving me many oppourtunities to take many pictures at extremely high, PNG type qualities
PNG is my favorite image type because I have noticed over the years that JPEG tends to distort pixels a little bit. PNG does not, and it is supported pretty much everywhere
If you want to compare PNG types with JPEG in terms of quality, wait until I start posting my KI pictures on here, and then compare the quality of the JPEG KI pictures, to the large PNG types like these:

In Vista there is the Snipping Tool, which is the only decent reason I know to use Vista... Much nicer than the screen capture of XP.

Or click START and type snip.
Once it comes up in the Start Menu, right-click and drag it to the Tool Bar and drop it then select Create Shortcut.
SL has a KI like ability to take pictures. It has way more options for easy screen capture than the KI. One I like is the ability to turn on or off the user interface and floating names. I hope some of those abilities come to the new KI. But only the Snipping Tool lets me select what part of the screen image I want.
Be sure to check out it's options.
The images are saved as PNG's. I usually convert mine to JPG before posting on Photobucket, Flickr or Koinup. I keep the PNG's as a source to work from. Jamey's many images come from PNG's and show what a little talented post processing can do to add drama and pizazz to an image. JPG source is not as good, IMO.
XP's 'Prt Scr' button and Alt-Prt Scr are handy but clumsy. FRAPS is a great tool for capturing screen shots and video, on both XP and Vista.

Just as a side note, however, I'm fairly certain the snipping tool does not work with games in full screen mode.

As promised

I also should give everyone an advanced notice.
I just ordered another version of Photoshop (CS4), which means that when it arrives in 6-10 days, I'm basically throwing out my current version (Elements 6.0). Photoshop CS4 will allow me to make pictures like these with many more features than what I could do with 6.0. Thankfully, I am already using CS4 at school for my schoolwork, so it is not like I'll be completely re-learning Photoshop.
So I am going to take a small break, but when I get the new version, I will continue remastering more pictures as usual.
I have plenty of screenshots ready to put through Photoshop CS4, and I'm REALLY looking forward to it.
Shorah!

I got Photoshop CS4 in the mail a few days ago, still working out some license difficulties right now, but I believe I'll have it fixed as soon as I can. (Give me a few days)
I think when I start posting remastered pictures from using it, you'll find it was worth the wait

I use Photoshop CS4 now. I used to have Photoshop Elements 6.0, but upgrading was the best decision I've ever made regarding these photos. I increased the contrast of the original image a bit, using both Auto-Contrast, and manually moving the contrast sliders (no Myst IV pun intended here!
) Nothing too much done to it, as I wanted to remain as true to the original image as possible.
In my mind, when remastering pictures, you want to make as few edits as possible, in order to keep the essence of the original image intact. The only time you should make many edits is if you want to go for a specific theme, such as turning the picture into a Texture, Old Photo, or giving it a blur effect or something like that.
I do not know if there are any Plug-ins for Photoshop versions other than CS4, mainly because I only use CS4 now
I hope this helps you out eyes only! I appreciate the feedback!

So I decided to work with my favorite spot in the whole game, Ahnonay Workshop!
First I used a bleach bypass effect on it, which made it a little too washed out, so I worked with the layers and made this dark and surreal (as if Ahnonay isn't surreal enough) version.
It's almost 1MB so I'll link to it:

That K'veer one, he showed me that right after he took it, and it's now my background wallpaper on my server. Also told me about this thread, and I'm amazed by the work you all are doing! Yes, I do think the lens flare was a bit overdone on some, but here's why:
Lens flare, when naturally occurring, is specific to the camera it is taken from (some shots you see circular flares, some hexegonal, some more oval, it's the iris of that camera). Natural flare (i.e. what you see with your eyes) will just look like glow or brighter. That's why you see games that have the "glow effect", when everything has the bright shiny misty glow, they're trying to get away from lens flare. Some times, it works, like with the Fountain Sparklers.
Now, back to the wallpapers:
This reminds me of the stuff I was doing right before the Gametap Uru Live. Here's a few:
My Cabin In Direbo

Some Uru Live wallpapers: (Note, they're just with the Uru Live logo, no other editing)
A night Eder Gira shot:

Kadish Tolesa Light Puzzle pieces:

Teledahn Hut

A ton of them, so I'm providing the link, all widescreen, from small to large:
http://www.phalkon13.com/urulivepics.php
on phalkon13.com, there's also a full-large widescreen of My Cabin in Direbo, in case you all wanna see....
I'm thinking I need to do a few more edits like that, from inside the Cabin (started work on it yesterday, and haven't been able to get screenshots since)

The next two fractal pieces are of Eder Gira and Kemo;

The pieces are significant on more than the obvious level; the fractal is called 'Phoenix (Julia)', which is seen in Eder Gira, which results in the appearance of two birds flying, phoenixi. The Eder Kemo fractal is the exact same graph, but the equation to create it is inversed, that results in the appearance of the phoenixi sitting, almost sleeping, on branches or a perches. The colours of the gradients for both are also the inverses of each other.

How'd you get up on that roof? Just curious, because I'd love to try.
Also, has there been any explanation of the haze in the cavern?
Uru's true beauty
Author: Jamey
Posted: Sat May 15, 2010 3:08 am
The haze (if you're referring to the high brightness and contrast in the pictures) is my Photoshop remastering, it still looks the same as always in-cavern.
The bug is complicated. It requires you to jump in between a lamp, and a side of the cavern wall on the top of the great stairs in a certain way, that literally sling-shots you to the roof (sometimes you may land in the lake)

I was always under the impression that the "haze" was just water vapor. I mean, it's a huge cavern full of water, after all. It's going to be really humid! That sickly orange color it gives off would purely be a result of the lake's light reflecting off of water droplets in the air.
Oh, and Chris, I really love the Kadish Tolesa one! That's some intense purple!

Love it! Nice lighting effect and cool unusual point of view of the building. Saved a copy of it, just like I save all your pics, they make fantastic desktop wallpapers
The lack of projected shadows make it look like you were cut out from another pic and glued on top of this one.
Also: the light source illuminating the bahro seems to be in a different angle; maybe you should have darkened him partly.
BTW notice how the balcony extends to the right hand side of the building and seems to connect directly to the area on top of those stairs.

I echo Ethan's sentiments regarding the lighting but overall very nicely done.
Ethan, it actually continues down to a hallway where there is another small staircase leading to the door you pass just beyond the Hall of Kings near the balcony overlooking the broken bridge. None of it is solid though as far as I can tell.

Yea, I want to know when it's daytime in Payiferen, and also if and when you can see in the night.

There are several web pages and offline applications that can tell you that.

What an awesome going away gift, Jamey. Thanks for sharing these pictures and the great memories.
This is a really neat thread you started here to showcase the community's talent. I've really enjoyed viewing yours and others' pictures here and I hope everyone will continue contributing to it for a very long time to come.
My picture isn't enhanced like some of the awesome ones in this thread, but the subject of it fits the topic of the thread.

Best wishes & safe journeys on your new adventure, Jamey.

Best of luck with college Jamey, I'll be saying some of the same things in a year (I'm doing all the apps now... and what a joy it is
)
You've taken some marvelous shots and shared some great memories.
Have fun!

Hey all, I've been browsing this thread for a while, love all of the work you all do. Thought it's about time I tried some uru ( and some from the other games) photoshop pics
Anyways, here is some of my attempts:

This one reminds me of the fall of D'ni. I'm going to post the URL to this one so I don't have to reduce it's size and quality. It's one of my favorites, so I hope you all enjoy this one:

Great job with the pics, fyxa. I have some that I did, where I put people in Riven, but I can't figure out how to post pics.

I don't know a single thing about modeling news ages, and computer programs and etc.. But I always wondered if i could draw an age, and if it would be that beautiful.
I usually get inspiration for my draws from all the myst series, to create backgrounds mainly. =D
Really nice pictures!
I might steal them for my desktop background....

Thanks guys!
Yeah, I still use Photoshop CS4 for my pics (I'm considering getting CS5 soon though as I can get a big student discount
)
I'll try to post pics as much as I can, but no promises. College has me extremely busy right now.

I love the darkened and enhanced colors in those, it just makes them seem more interesting

A friend of ours just photoshopped a bell pepper into a foggy mountain scene and made it look like floating worlds almost like spire. It got us inspired to try something like that ourselves. So my friend and I made this using kitchen supplies, paint, and some copper wire I found on a trail
I think it looks a little myst-ish, so I thought I would post it here to get some feedback.

It looks like someone found the "Poster Edges" filter in Photoshop. I often use that filter to create a comic book effect.

Was there a lot of touching up done on that one? That looks a lot better than most of my experiences with the poster edges filter. The Noloben one looks a lot more like what I'd expect

I think the only thing that could have been done differently was to somehow distort the images (blur, etc) to make them more "old camera" and less modern tech.
Done! Good suggestion tanshin!

Perhaps you could try something with Kadish Tolesa? That area where you come around the corner and see the purple sky is gorgeous.

Awesomeness!
I think I'm pretty familiar with most Myst-Uru games/places and this doesn't look familiar at all. I'm guessing it's an original creation of yours inspired by the Riven dagger. Am I right?

Yep, this is for an assignment for my 3D Modeling course I'm currently taking. Everything in the photo was made by me. I made every texture by hand in Photoshop, and created every model from scratch in the same program used to make Uru: 3DS Max.
